#2 of the 5 tracks in my “resolution” series, “Going Home” was created in September 2010, and is entirely electronic (so, no “real” guitar, let alone voice appearing at any point). Again, all of the instruments are from Logic Pro itself; nothing added (I wasn’t yet experimenting with any 3rd party synthesiser modules, and experiencing the true paradox of choice of too many options!).
As I recorded each track in this series, I wanted to learn something new in terms of technique; through creating an end result rather than just learning the abstract theory. For this track, the learning points were:
- creative use of the “quantising” technique; rather than simply using quantising to force notes played freehand (in the first 30 seconds of the piano part) to fall on the beats, I used it to group the notes increasingly together into fewer and fewer chords, and then to unwind the process back to the original freehand melody by the end of the piece, and
- use of the “arpeggiator” which takes a chord and automatically turns it into rising/falling/random patterns of the constituent notes of that chord.
The emotional note that this track struck with me was one of hope and anticipation, hence the title. There’s something in the percussion that’s a little reminiscent of a train making good progress over tracks; carrying you towards your hoped-for destination.
